How to Properly Clean Your Dog’s Bed

While your dog might not mind a bit of a smell, sometimes their belongings can be quite overpowering on the nose. This is especially true when it comes to their bed as this can be dirtied through doggy sweat, accidental bowel movements or canine fungal infections. If you’re stuck with a stinky dog bed, here are some helpful tips to clean away the germs and get rid of that smell.

1) Clean the Cover

The first step will be to remove the cover from your pooch’s bed and clean it following the instructions on the label. Make sure you vacuum this first though to remove any excess dog hairs which could end up clogging your drains or pipes.

After this, you have two options: machine washing or hand washing the covers. Which one you pick depends on the material your bed is made from. Always make sure to check and follow all washing instructions when cleaning your dog bed so you get rid of dirt and grime while protecting the material at the same time. It is better to be safe than sorry as these items can be rather expensive to replace.

There are some extra tips to use on these pooch beds so they become spotless and hygienic in the future:

  • Use stain remover to get rid of any stubborn bed stains
  • Soak the cover in hot water for 15 minutes to kill all insect eggs
  • Put apple cider vinegar in the washing machine to remove bad odours

In this way, your pooch’s bed cover will be fresh and clean once you’ve finished with it in the laundry.

2) Wash the Base

It may also be necessary to clean the base as well. Again, how you do this depends on the design. Some models can be cleaned in the washing machine. Alternatively, some small and large dog beds are made of foam which needs hand washing. If this is the case, you’ll need to follow a few simple steps to disinfect the base, getting rid of those unpleasant odours and any harmful bacteria at the same time:

  1. Fill your bath with water
  2. Add washing powder & apple cider vinegar
  3. Immerse the foam bed in the water
  4. Work the soap into the foam with your hands
  5. Pay extra attention to soiled areas
  6. Leave to soak for 15 minutes
  7. Drain out water while squeezing out foam
  8. Leave bed in tub and fill with clean water
  9. Repeat step 7
  10.  Place base in a sunny location

This procedure will help eliminate any nasty smells and microbes from your dog’s bed, keeping it both hygienic and pleasant on the nose.

3) Keep It Fresh

Once you’ve got your cover and base clean, there are a number of ways in which you can keep your doggy bed fresh and free from bad smells for longer. By incorporating the following simple tasks into your routine, you can put off having to properly wash your canine’s sleeping mat for quite a while:

  • Cover the bed with a blanket. Thus, you’ll only need to wash and replace the blanket when the bed gets smelly.
  • Wipe down the bed with a mixture of 16 parts water, 1 part apple cider vinegar on a daily basis. Use a small, soft towel.
  • Sprinkle baking soda onto the bed and work it in with your hands. Leave it to sit for 15 minutes and then shake off the powder outside.

With this advice, you can sanitise your pooch’s bed and keep it smelling fresh for a very long time. Eliminate those doggy smells from your home for good!
