How Often Should You Take Your Dog to the Vets?

Dogs need to visit the vets to stay healthy, just like humans need to go to the doctors. Some people think you shouldn’t have to take a dog to the vet if they appear healthy, but taking them at least once a year at least is important. You should definitely take your dog to the vet when there seems to be something wrong, so that any problems can be sorted. But just how often should you and your canine pal venture down the vet? Read on to find out:

Dog to the Vet

For Initial Checkups

The initial checkup you take your dog to is very important; whether you bought them from a breeder, rescued them from a shelter, or gave them a loving home after finding them cold and dishevelled on the street. No matter the age of the dog when you first get them, always take them for an initial check up. It’s important that you find out whether or not they are totally healthy or have any potential problems.

For Vaccinations

All dogs need to have their vaccinations, as scheduled by the vet that you’ve been taking them to. Puppies need a lot of shots in their first year of life, while older dogs will only need shots every now and again. Check with your vet and make appropriate appointments.

For Yearly Visits

Even if there’s been nothing wrong with your dog all year, you should take him to the vets at least once for a quick check up to make sure everything is still in order. This can help to stop any potential problems in their tracks with a pet prescription and fix them before they get worse.

After Eating Any Toxic Foods

Some foods are toxic to dogs, so it’s important that a visit to the vet is made straight away. Foods like; chocolate, raisins, and grapes are all no good for dogs and should be avoided. Anti freeze and alcohol are poisonous, so it’s especially important you keep those out of reach.

When Your Dog Isn’t Eating

If your dog is missing his meals, it might be a good idea to take him to the vets. Dogs will eat just about anything you put in front of them most of the time (although you shouldn’t do that), so when they’re missing meals something is probably wrong.

If Your Dog Gets Bitten

Whether your dog gets bitten by another dog, a cat, or a wild kangaroo, you should always take them to the vets afterwards. The vet may need to administer a jab to stop them getting any diseases, for example, rabies.

Some people think that if their dog isn’t showing any signs of illness, then they don’t need a visit to the vet. However, it’s important they go at least once a year for a regular checkup along with all of the other instances listed above to keep your furry friend in good health! Remember; dogs are for life, so you don’t want to take any chances when it comes to their well being.
